Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Dramaturgical Presentation”

In this activity, students will prepare presentations with visual aids (slide decks, handouts, or artwork) on an aspect of production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

One of the many wonderful things about plays is their ability to be performed in front of an audience. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child had its professional debut, or premiere, at the Palace Theatre in London on June 7, 2016. Since then, there have been seven additional productions, including ones on Broadway and in Tokyo.

Producing a play takes a lot of work; many people work behind the scenes to bring the acts, stage directions, and dialogue to life. One of those people is called a dramaturg. Dramaturgs take extensive notes, research any topics necessary for production, and ultimately provide a bridge between playwrights, directors, and other administrative theater staff. For this activity, practice becoming a real-life dramaturg. Choose an aspect of one of the professional productions of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, then use the list below as a guide to help you analyze and present your research. Plan, compile, and present your findings using a slide show, original artwork, handouts, or any other magical accompaniment that aids your presentation.

  • Visual aids should be visually appealing, helpful, and clearly organized. They should not replace the need for talking but enhance your talking points instead.
  • Prepare a presentation that is between 3-6 minutes long, if not directed otherwise by your teacher.
  • Although you will be looking at the production as a whole, choose 1-2 scenes to illustrate your points. For example, how does the climax of the play change depending on the theater the show is set in? How does an American cast differ from a British one?
  • Consider the following options as starting points for research:
  • Performance: casting, performance reviews, direction
  • Facility: theatre information, city/location, historical background
  • Audience Reception: critical reviews, audience reviews/popular culture responses, relation to the general world of Harry Potter
  • Script: updates or changes, awards, criticisms or accolades

This may be an opportunity to win points for your House that contribute toward the House Cup. Even though you are presenting research and facts, do not be afraid to be brave, cunning, intelligent, and honest—like the Four Founders!

Teaching Suggestion: This activity can provide an additional opportunity for House Cup points. Students can gain points based on the most helpful dramaturgical presentations or class favorites. To encourage participation and constructive criticism from the group, you might try distributing rubrics that can feature anonymous feedback for each presenter. Presenters can be organized according to their Houses, or they can present individually.

Differentiation Suggestion: Students who might benefit from an opportunity to incorporate technology into the project might record and edit their presentation as a brief, informative video.
