Long Answer
1. Charlie demonstrates strength by telling Ben he no longer wants to see him after Charlie sees Ben with his girlfriend at the school gates. Charlie understands he is being used, and he chooses to break off the relationship instead of allowing the unhealthy behavior to continue, even though he was enjoying seeing Ben and finds Ben very attractive. Later, Charlie also stands his ground when Ben insists that they keep seeing each other. It is only the physical aspects of Ben’s assault that Nick protects Charlie from.
2. Charlie’s friends are confused about why he would hang out with Nick, who is such a blatant “jock,” and Charlie is so far out of Nick’s friends’ circle that they only know him as the “gay kid.” Neither friend group even supports the idea of Charlie and Nick being friends. This creates friction in both of their friendships and makes it difficult to share time with each other without sacrificing their other friends’ time and respect. However, having to spend time alone together without their other friends allows them to get to know each other on a more intimate level and allows their romance to blossom.
3. Oseman uses dark panels and frames with jagged edges to illustrate the extremely tense moments is the story, such as when Ben assaults Charlie in the music room in Chapter 1. She also uses a snow-like effect in the background of panels when something “magical” happens, like when Nick brushes Charlie’s newly cut hair or when Charlie takes Nick’s hands to show him how to play the drums. Stars, flowers, leaves, and emojis are also used throughout the novel to convey the emotions of the characters, often in frames illustrated from the character’s point of view.
