Consider some of the success symbols described in the short story. Which ones are the Changs able to achieve? Which are still outside of their grasp and why? Who are some of the gatekeepers that keep them outside?

How has the immigration landscape changed since this story’s publication? Consider things like Booker’s statements about hiring undocumented immigrants and the country club’s racism. Do the themes in this story hold true today? What new struggles do immigrants face in the United States today?
