Adam and Connor spend the afternoon playing video games at Adam’s house. Adam starts playing his guitar, too, and they talk about their feelings. Adam shares more about Zayneb.

Zayneb and Auntie Nandy visit Katara together. Zayneb marvels at the sights as they wander around the cultural village. Then they head to the amphitheater to meet up with Adam’s family. Auntie Nandy secretly made the plans. On the way, Zayneb decides that she’ll have to apologize to Adam in person. Adam texts Zayneb to meet him on the beach in front of the amphitheater. They sneak out together and find a place where there are still people around, as they’re not supposed to be alone together. They discuss what happened at the museum and apologize to one another. Adam starts talking about the water, and Zayneb begins to cry. She tells him about her grandmother and how upset she is about what’s happening.

Adam and Zayneb change the subject back to the water. They talk about the color blue, and Adam recalls the hijab Zayneb wore when they first met. Adam talks about his MS and his fears about the future, too. They agree that they’re glad that they met. They start speaking in metaphors and discussing their thirst. They rejoin their families thereafter.

Zayneb and Auntie Nandy go for a swim. Zayneb feels happy thinking about her conversation with Adam the day before. She’s excited that he likes her and realizes that she likes herself, too. Then, an elderly couple confronts Zayneb about her swim attire. Zayneb doesn’t back down and defends herself. Determined not to give up on what she believes, she goes home and researches Fencer’s handle again, too.

Zayneb and Auntie Nandy go to Adam’s to help him paint his room while his dad and sister are out. Zayneb tells Adam about what happened at the pool while they work. They also discuss their relationship and what they’ve told their families about one another. Eventually, Zayneb starts telling Adam more about Fencer, and this time, he looks as if he wants to hug her.

Chapter 34 Summary: “Adam, Thursday, March 21, Marvel: Connections”

Adam, Zayneb, and Ms. Raymond finish the room project by the time Adam’s dad and Hanna return from the beach. Adam goes to bed feeling happy. In the morning, he says goodbye to Connor before Connor flies back to California for school. Afterward, he texts Zayneb to meet up at the museum before he and his family prepare for Hanna’s birthday. Zahid gives Adam a ride. At the museum, Adam shows Zayneb his Marvels and Oddities journal and reveals that he’s known they have the same one since meeting. They exclaim at the coincidence and reminisce about their meeting. Then, they talk about their relationship and the future. Together, they go to the café and continue talking. Zayneb shows Adam some hateful things she discovered Fencer posting online. They go on to discuss strength, fear, weakness, and bravery. Her expression changes when Adam talks about his work and the room he made. Ms. Raymond suggests showing the room to a mutual friend, too. They all go to Adam’s house, and the friend joins. He looks genuinely excited by Adam’s work. He later invites Adam to show some work at the local museum.

Chapters 30-39 Analysis

Chapters 30-39 resolve the novel’s primary conflicts and thematic explorations. Once Zayneb and Adam realize that they want to make amends and be in one another’s lives, they are better able to face their personal and societal challenges together. Throughout the novel, both Zayneb and Adam have been grappling with Muslim Identity in Contemporary Society. They’ve also been learning how to understand themselves in the context of Adam’s chronic illness and their developing romance. Meanwhile, the constant racism and Islamophobia they face have complicated their ability to feel peaceful and content. However, together, the characters discover that they are both stronger and more loving. As the narrative progresses through its descending action, Zayneb and Adam find peace, understanding, and support through hard times.

Adam’s conversations with Connor help him to make sense of his feelings for Zayneb. In Chapter 30, Adam realizes how much he needs someone by his side who will not only support him through his illness but encourage him as he tries to make sense of his future. He realizes that this person could be Zayneb, as he admires her “straight-shooting talk,” the way she says “things so resolutely,” and the “sense of bravado” she brings to every situation (265). Therefore, in Zayneb’s absence, Adam begins to understand how much she means to him. He relies on Connor to process these complex feelings and discovers that he loves Zayneb because she is always unabashedly herself. Connor offers Adam the sounding board that he needs to talk through his emotions and pursue healing with Zayneb. Being vulnerable with Connor gives Adam the courage to be vulnerable with Zayneb in turn.

Meanwhile, Zayneb’s conversations with Auntie Nandy similarly inspire her to apologize to Adam and to make amends for their disagreements. Her experiences at the Katara cultural village with her aunt particularly lead her to this revelation. The setting impacts Zayneb emotionally and gives her the space to reflect on what she’s been feeling about Adam. As a result, she and Adam are able to come together on the beach and speak openly about their feelings. This scene marks another turning point in Zayneb’s and Adam’s individual and shared storylines. The water that they’re looking at and describing throughout their conversation is symbolic of purity, newness, and healing. Being near the water therefore grants them the peace to discuss what they want without fear or shame. In these ways, both characters learn to rely upon their loved ones to understand their emotions, which in turn grants them the courage to be vulnerable with each other.

The final chapters of the novel offer Zayneb and Adam a happy, hopeful ending. Adam figures out how to manage his MS while simultaneously pursuing his academic and artistic goals. Zayneb works with her friends to combat the racism and Islamophobia at her school and has her own academic successes thereafter, too. The characters’ marriage in Chapter 39 acts as the novel’s ultimate resolution. Their romance has led them through a wealth of personal and societal challenges while simultaneously teaching them about themselves and strengthening their relationship.
