Chapter 8 Summary

Nimona hopes to cheer up Blackheart after his fight with Goldenloin and suggests they visit a science fair. They go in disguise, with Nimona in the form of a young boy named Gregor. When she eventually grows bored, Blackheart agrees to let her sleep on his shoulder as a kitten. He then meets Dr. Meredith Blitzmeyer, a lady with white hair and goggles, who shows him her Anomalous Energy Enhancer. She enthusiastically tells him about her device, which contains an infinite source of green-glowing energy that she has yet to find a use for: “This humble device, good sir, is the first step to reconciling science and magic” (108). Dr. Blitzmeyer gives him her business card. Blackheart is equally enthused, but their conversation is cut short when the device malfunctions. He runs away with Nimona still in cat form and finds out that she is stuck, unable to shift back into her true shape. They flee the science fair, causing chaos as Nimona panics and runs amok, accidentally setting tents ablaze in the process before she is knocked unconscious.

As guards approach to confront Blackheart, who has now lost his disguise, he grabs Nimona and runs to safety. When she awakens, she transforms into a dragon and flies away with him. Back at home, Nimona bursts through the door looking mostly like herself, but with large, scaled arms. She is angry because she has never lost control of her powers before, which causes her to spiral. While Blackheart tries to calm her down, postulating that Blitzmeyer’s device had an unexpected effect on her, Nimona gets more enraged. She punches through furniture and walls and gradually becomes bigger and more aggressive. She stops suddenly as she is about to throw a boulder at Blackheart and walks away, apologizing for destroying his kitchen.

Chapter 9 Summary

Blackheart and Nimona are silently watching the latest news report about the fake jaderoot poisonings. Blackheart innocuously remarks that Nimona’s hair is now purple. He tries to get her to open up to him about her struggles, but she shuts him down.

Back at the Institution, the Director asks Goldenloin to kill Blackheart, which he argues against. She eventually relents and agrees to let Blackheart live in custody if Goldenloin kills Nimona. She then gives him technologically enhanced armor to carry out his mission and suggests he set a trap for Blackheart.

Later, Nimona infiltrates a Royal Tournament set to feature Goldenloin. She reports to Blackheart that she cannot find his nemesis. In the Institution’s headquarters, the Director searches the tournament crowd for Blackheart but notices that one of the civilians suddenly gets sick. The crowd, suspecting jaderoot poisoning, gets angry at the guards, and a chaotic uprising ensues. The guards attempt to defend themselves with new technological weapons, and Blackheart interferes by sending a sound wave at Nimona’s signal. In having taken control of the speakers at the tournament, he broadcasts a message exposing the Institution’s corruption, encouraging the civilians to take their power back. The Director traces his signal back to the Institution’s headquarters and sends a team to apprehend him. Led by Goldenloin, the guards arrest Blackheart, who goes without protest. Goldenloin leads him to a secure room, which goes into lockdown immediately after Nimona arrives to rescue Blackheart. Realizing it was a trap, Blackheart and Nimona fight Goldenloin and the guards. The latter are unable to subdue Nimona until they cut off her dragon head. Blackheart believes she is dead, but her body reforms into a dark dragon. She burns a hole through the roof and escapes with Blackheart, leaving Goldenloin injured in the process.

Nimona, in her larger form, carries a confused Blackheart home before leaving to find out whether Goldenloin is alive. At the Institution, a wounded Goldenloin tells the Director that the shapeshifter is more dangerous than they thought, and she replies that simply “fighting her is no longer the plan” (162).

Chapters 8-9 Analysis

Chapters 8 and 9 mark a shift in the narrative as it takes on a gradually darker tone, even including some horror undertones. Symbolically, the change in Nimona’s hair from red to purple represents her evolution through trauma. When the Institution beheads Nimona, she transforms into a dark, red-eyed dragon. Nimona undergoes dramatic transformations when she is angry at momentarily losing control of her shapeshifting due to Dr. Blitzmeyer’s device and when she carries an injured Blackheart home. She also morphs into a larger, scaly form of herself like she did briefly when she felt threatened by Blackheart in Chapter 5. These instances suggest that she uses her dark dragon form when she feels scared or threatened. Although her transformation underscores her unpredictable and variable nature, she also transforms when Blackheart is endangered, further developing the theme of The Significance of Found Family. At the same time, her relationship with Blackheart deteriorates as her attempts to protect him end in death and violence, leading Blackheart to realize that he cannot control her impulses.

Chapter 9 thematically develops Shifting Identity as Queer Symbolism and Ambivalent Morality and Moral Dilemmas. The dramatic revelation that Nimona is virtually immortal leads Goldenloin to negatively label Nimona: “We assumed she was a girl disguised as a monster, but she’s not. She’s a monster disguised as a girl” (162). This reversal of perspective creates suspense and shows that Goldenloin’s character is at a moral crossroads: He could equally choose to kill Nimona or join Blackheart’s side. In labeling Nimona a “monster,” Goldenloin aligns with the Institution in “othering” Nimona. In tandem, Blackheart finally exposes the Institution publicly, forcing the Director’s hand in trying to destroy him. Now that the Institution has nothing to lose, the Director becomes more violent and dangerous. This creates a significant parallel with Nimona’s own defense mechanism, as she also becomes aggressive when she is cornered. The difference, however, is in the intention behind those reactions. Whereas the Institution seeks to maintain power, Nimona only attempts to protect herself in reaction to the trauma she has endured. As a result, the main characters are all facing moral quandaries that foreshadow their climactic confrontation in the final chapters.
