Part 3: “Destruction”

Chapter 26 Summary: “Dean, 2009, Portland”

Dean arrives at Nainoa’s apartment in Portland and finds Khadeja outside the building. She informs him that Nainoa’s stuff will be removed from the apartment unless the landlord is paid $4,500 in overdue rent. A short time later, a moving van arrives along with the sheriff. Dean confronts the movers. The movers toss Nainoa’s clothes on the sidewalk and say, “Surf’s up!” (264). Upset by the movers’ disrespect, Dean carries Nainoa’s belongings back into the apartment.

Around this time, Kaui arrives. Dean gets into a fight with the movers and ends up handcuffed in the sheriff’s car, along with Kaui. However, the sheriff decides not to arrest them. After the sheriff leaves, Dean and Kaui break into the apartment and bring some of Nainoa’s stuff back inside.

Chapter 27 Summary: “Kaui, 2009, Portland”

When the sheriff returns to the house, Dean and Kaui grab some things and run out. The sheriff chases them. Kaui finds a car with the engine idling and steals it. She picks up Dean, who jumps out from some hedges. When Dean discovers Kaui stole the car, he pushes her out. When the sheriff stops the car, only Dean is in it.

Part 3, Chapters 26-27 Analysis

The culture and economic class tensions that run throughout the novel heat up in these chapters. First, the family’s impoverished condition reemerges to play a key role because they cannot afford to pay the $4,500 in overdue rent. Second, the cultural schism between the islands and the mainland bubbles to the surface in one line: “Surf’s up!” (264). The mover’s snide remark and the disrespectful way he handles Nainoa’s clothes, tossing a shirt in the mud, sets off Dean and eventually leads to his being arrested.
