Chapter 8 Summary: “Brett”

On Sunday morning, Brett’s father returns from his trip to New York. Brett takes Becca’s advice, accepts his father’s apology for missing his game, and enjoys the evening. However, during dinner, Mr. Wells announces that he has to go out of town again the following weekend, and Mrs. Wells becomes very upset. Brett realizes that his father has “been leaving more often than usual in the past few months” (97), but he doesn’t understand why his mother is taking his father’s absences so hard. The next morning, Brett’s mother is still acting strange, and so is Becca. During lunch, Becca ignores Brett and reads a book instead, but he finally tells her that he is “having a pretty rough morning and [his] girlfriend being mad at [him] is not helping” (99). He tells Becca about everything that happened with his parents over the weekend, and Becca listens attentively and offers comfort and support. Still, she encourages him not to think about it too much: After all, it was just one strange night at home. Brett also realizes that Becca is upset about something, but when he asks her about it, she avoids answering him. Jeff joins them at the table and invites Becca and Brett to the marsh party at Lovers’ Lake on Friday. To Brett’s surprise, Becca agrees to go. Jeff pulls out a box of jelly bells, which surprises Becca, and he explains that Jenny was handing out flyers to the team and encouraging people to go to Becca’s mom’s bakery. Jeff leaves, and Becca asks if Brett has ever brought a girl to Lovers’ Lake before. Brett admits that Becca will be the first.

Chapter 9 Summary: “Becca”

At Lovers’ Lake, Becca and Brett make their way through the marshy, mosquito-infested woods to join the other students from Eastwood High School. Brett’s football team won their second game, but once again, Brett’s parents didn’t attend because Brett’s dad had just left for Ohio. Becca runs into Jenny and thanks her for handing out the flyers for her mom’s bakery, and she tells Jenny that she didn’t tell her about Brett because she “didn’t think [she and Jenny] were friends anymore” (113). Jenny apologizes for her past behavior. Becca rejoins Brett, and they resume their couple charade. Becca asks why Brett hasn’t told Jeff the truth about their fake relationship, and Brett demonstrates Jeff’s untrustworthiness by sharing a false rumor with Jeff and watching it spread throughout the woods. Becca kisses Brett, and she feels something “stirring inside [her]” (119) that worries her. Becca and Brett discuss their plans after high school, and they both admit they want to leave Crestmont.

Brett invites Becca to go to a diner in another town. He explains that he used to come to this diner with his dad when he was a kid, and they talk about their parents and careers. Brett’s father is the chief financial officer of a big hotel chain, and his mother doesn’t have to work. Becca explains that her mother used to be a nurse before she opened the bakery. As they enjoy their food, an expensive car pulls up next to them, and Becca sees “an older couple holding hands” (126) inside it. Brett notices the car and the couple and looks shocked and horrified. He speeds away from the diner, and once Becca calms him down, Brett explains that the man in the car was his dad, and the woman with him wasn’t Brett’s mom. Brett starts to panic and asks Becca to read to him to distract him. Becca reads from one of her romance novels, and Brett listens intently and tries to process what he saw.

Chapter 10 Summary: “Brett”

Brett tries to come to terms with what he saw in the diner parking lot. He tries to convince himself that maybe the man he saw wasn’t his father: After all, “it was dark,” and he still feels “a shred of hope” (132) that maybe this is all just a big misunderstanding. Still, he wonders if all of his dad’s “business trips” were a lie. The next morning, Brett calls Becca and asks her to come to his house while his mom and dad are away. They investigate Brett’s dad’s office, looking for clues that might reveal his whereabouts. They call the hotel Brett’s dad would have stayed at in Ohio, but no one named Thomas Wells is staying there. Brett becomes frantic, searching his parents’ room for any sign of his father’s infidelity. Becca tells Brett how hard it was to deal with her parents’ divorce when she was younger. She reminds him that it’s not his fault that his dad is having an affair, and Brett is still reeling from the shock. He remembers all the times he found his mom crying when his dad left. He realizes that his family’s perfect life was “just a facade,” and “if [he] pull[s] back the curtain, there [is] a whole lot of shit hiding behind it” (140).

Chapters 8-10 Analysis

In Chapter 6, Brett is still upset with his father but is willing to forgive him for missing his football game. He concludes that missing one football game is insignificant compared to a lifetime of unwavering support. However, the Brett of Chapter 9 is met with yet another round of disappointment. His father has once again let him down by missing a game, and Brett is starting to feel that something is amiss in his picture-perfect life. As upset as Brett is, he hesitates to “lift the curtain” and reveal to anyone how strangely unhappy his home and his parents are right now. He doesn’t even tell his best friend, Jeff, which hints that Brett doesn’t have many people to talk to and share his deepest thoughts and feelings with. His willingness to open up to Becca and “lift the curtain” by talking about his family problems illustrates how Brett is starting to trust Becca in a way he hasn’t trusted many people before. Their friendship is blossoming, and as Light implies, it seems to be turning into something more than friendship by the end of Chapter 9.

As the novel continues, Brett and Becca’s fake-dating scenario becomes more real. In the lunchroom in Chapter 8, Brett slips up and mentally congratulates his girlfriend for doing well on her calculus test, but then he corrects himself and tries to remember Becca isn’t really his girlfriend. Similarly, Becca’s feelings for Brett intensify at Lovers’ Lake, and she kisses him “for show” in the darkness. Becca panics and realizes that she is starting to have feelings for Brett, so she tries to lock her heart down and protect it from potential heartbreak by reminding herself that her relationship with Brett isn’t real. The lines between fiction and reality are blurring for Becca and Brett, and they are both confused, nervous, and excited by this change in their relationship.

Just as the romance begins to kindle between Becca and Brett, their relationship is unintentionally taken to a new level: The hammer drops, and Brett realizes that his father is having an affair. Brett’s vision of his perfect father is shattered, and he starts questioning his worldview. As Brett struggles to make sense of his new reality where his childhood idol is a cheater and a liar, Becca is there by Brett’s side to offer him comfort, perspective, and support. Although Becca and Brett have only known each other for a few weeks, they bond over their complicated family situations and their disappointment in their fathers. Becca doesn’t leave Brett’s side, and when he calls for help in Chapter 10, Becca runs across town to make it to Brett.
